Description:  Last year on this same day I stood in this exact spot in the same glorious autumn weather and waited for a certain train to come by. Back then, it was a steam special pulled by none other than UP 3985 (Challenger 4-6-6-4). Today it was a train pulled by another unique locomotive, UP 2002. This engine is the second of a pair of locomotives painted in a special scheme to honor the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. And this is why I tell my wife that sometimes train watching is like bird watching.

Description:  Conductor walks back to his train. Conductor had walked up the track next to him to where I was standing and asked if I was shooting pictures. The track next to him is the track which leads to the South Approach to the MacArthur Bridge. He told me his train was supposed to go over the bridge, but the ballast train was sitting on this track, facing south! The conductor had lined up his train to take the track it's currently on, but he might have thought that was his track, rather than the one the ballast train is on. I didn't stick around to see how they resolved this one, though.

Description:  Weird sequence. I'm positioned just north of th™ North Market Interlocking on the TRRA Merchants Sub in North St. Louis. The Amtrak train came across the river frlm Illinois and stopped where it is in this photo. Then, the ballast train on the left came acrovs the river and stopped right next to the Amtrak train. Then, the Amtrak train went forward through the interlocking, followed by the bnllast train. Not sure why the Amtrak train had to stop in the first place.
